Sahlgrenska Life

A unique connection between medical research and modern healthcare

The faculties of health and medical sciences of Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the University of Gothenburg are located at each side of the heavily trafficked road Per Dubbsgatan in Gothenburg. The road physically blocks the ambition of enhanced cooperation and knowledge sharing between the two institutions.

With its 90,000 m², Sahlgrenska Life will be the largest development to date of the area surrounding Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and characterised, among other things, by its three-deck bridge across Per Dubbsgatan which will connect the university and the hospital. This connection will create a natural meeting space between medical and health practice, teaching and research. People from different professional disciplines will meet in the passage, the shared canteen, cafes, classrooms, library and meeting and conference facilities. Outside, stairs will lead across the roof and open up the possibility of going down via a path to the rugged park, whose characteristic rocks will be visible as solid back walls indoor.

The two main buildings will be connected to the large Sahlgrenska University Hospital towards the south and the medical environment of the University of Gothenburg towards the north.

The two main buildings will be connected to the large Sahlgrenska University Hospital towards the south and the medical environment of the University of Gothenburg towards the north. This will make Sahlgrenska Life a central part of the area, where the natural movement patterns of researchers, students, doctors and citizens converge and cross in the very same building.

The two buildings with 11 and 21 storeys, respectively, will house environments with strong professional competencies, making it easy and simple to exchange knowledge across professional and educational boundaries. At the same time, several storeys will house private businesses, which will be located close to the university environment's extensive knowledge and the practical daily life at the hospital. This will create a strong basis for massive knowledge sharing and a robust research environment.

The project was designed together with representatives from the hospital, the university and a private investor.
